"No Amero, No Sombrero" - Demonstration March - Houston, TX. 5 / 1 / 2010
There are those that say there comes a point when America will need to draw the line in terms of how many immigrants will be welcomed with open arms and granted citizenship in the country.
There are others who simply believe the government will spend too much money trying to deport the immigrants who are already here.
Still others will argue that it is the choice of each individual to make their lives in whichever country, continent, valley, mountain, or desert they choose.
A young American woman once told me she supported deportation because “Americans treat immigrants so unfairly here that they’re better off back in their own country”. (She sincerely felt bad for undocumented immigrants).
But the Mexican American next to her asked if she had ever seen the average Mexican immigrant’s life back home. Miles past touristic border towns there is no electricity, no plumbing and no grocery stores. The average person travels by mule, grows his/her own food, and builds his/her own home out of wooden boards or concrete if he/she can afford it.
But the American woman had never seen such a place.
The Justice Department filed a lawsuit last week in a federal court in Phoenix against the Arizona immigration law. The Arizona law — which Ms. Brewer signed in April and which, barring an injunction, takes effect July 29 — makes it a crime to be an illegal immigrant there. It also requires police officers to determine the immigration status of people they stop for other offenses if there is a “reasonable suspicion” that they might be illegal immigrants.
Ms. Brewer, who has recently been trailed by television cameras, calls the lawsuit “outrageous” and said the state was receiving donations from around the country to help fight it.
“I think Arizona will win,” she said, “and we will take a position for all of America.”
The next question to consider will be whether or not law enforcement officers applying this law will find a constitutional way to enforce it.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
